Creature Mark

Creature Mark Project

In this project, I was asked to create a black and white animal using geometric shapes such as lines and ellipses. In addition to creating a geometric animal, I was asked to capture the personality and defining factors of said animal. After creating the animal mark, I was then tasked with creating and adding a short typographic phrase that fits into the Fibonacci Proportion.

Research

I started my research by finding photos of my chosen animal, the red panda. When looking at their physical features, their black belly, striped tail, and masked eyes stuck out to me right away. Next, I researched their physical, behavioral, and personality traits.

Physical Traits:
- Large round heads
- big pointed ears
- Black bellies and legs
- White and black markings on the face
- Long bushy tails

Behavioral Traits:
- Mark their territories
- Very skilled climbers with flexible ankles
- Eat a lot of bamboo

Personality Traits:
- Sweet but shy temper
- Tend to keep to themselves
- Charming and playful

Typographic Composition

The next phase in the creature mark project was adding a short phrase into my composition while using the Fibonacci proportions.  My phrase was, Red panda crimson fluff in the bamboo forest. I knew that I wanted to play with the type to make implied imagery, especially with the word bamboo.

Final

My final represents the environment that a red panda lives in and the behavioral traits of one. Red pandas live in bamboo forests, and bamboo is a huge part of their diet. I created bamboo stocks out of the letters that make up the word bamboo. They also spend a lot of their time in trees, so I positioned my animal mark as if it were climbing up a tree.
