Apex Magazine

Publication Design Project

Tasked with creating visually dynamic compositions that effectively communicate the content hierarchy through a sequence of page spreads. I created a science and technology magazine all about the engineering behind Formula 1 cars.

Research

I started by researching different articles about F1 engineering and watching how the cars work to determine the concept for my magazine. F1 is the pinnacle of motor sport racing at speeds higher than any other form of racing.

After my research concluded, I landed on the concept of speed.

Wordmark

The first part of my publication design was to create a wordmark title that represented my concept. I chose the word apex because not only does it mean the highest point of something, but it is a F1 term when talking about the track.

Type Study 2

I wanted a more dynamic and fluid wordmark, which wasn’t possible with the all-caps italic font.

Magazine Spreads

I created four spreads in total.
Two for a feature article and two for an interview article.
Each article has a title page and a page continuing the article.

Feature Article

This article is all about the engineering that goes into a Formula 1 car, so it can perform.

This is where I nailed down the concept that I chose to move forward with.
